Abstract
Tensor Gravity (FTG) Gradiometry data are routinely used in underway exploration programmes to evaluate and explore geological complexities hosting hydrocarbon and mineral resources. FTG data is typically used to map host structure and locate target responses of interest using a myriad of imaging techniques. Identified anomalies of interest are then examined using 2D&3D forward and inverse modelling methods for depth estimation. However, such methods tend to be time consuming and reliant on independent constraint for clarification. This paper presents an alternative approach to depth estimating FTG data. The method makes direct usage of the vertical tensor components of FTG data and is executed on gridded data. Computation times are fast producing high confidence single solution depth estimates that relate directly to anomalies. The data example used is an Air-FTG® survey acquired over the Vinton Dome salt feature, Louisiana, USA. The benefits of Automated Depth Estimation for FTG data are its ability to quickly construct depth maps with confidence. Such results are used to produce best estimate initial depth to source maps that can act as initial starting models for any in depth quantitative modelling exercises using 2D/3D forward/inverse modelling techniques.
