Abstract
The South Caspian Basin has a long history of exploration with the first oil field discovered in 1848, following<br>instructions from Prince Mikhail Vorontsov to “authorise new oil exploration in the Bibi-Eibat Section, Baku<br>District, on the Caspian Sea coast, by means of earth drills and use 1000 Roubles for this purpose” (as quoted by<br>Gökay, 1999).
