Abstract

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a powerful way of modeling fluid flow, heat transfer, and related processes for a wide range of important scientific and engineering problems. Unlike experiments that only permit data to be extracted at a limited number of locations in the system (e.g. pressure and temperature probes, heat flux gauges, etc.), CFD allows the analyst to examine a large number of locations in the region of interest and yields a comprehensive set of flow parameters for examination. Simply, CFD provides the ability to theoretically simulate any physical condition. Increasing demand for energy resulted in the exploration more sources and subsequently expansion of drilling activities all over the world. Any improvement in terms of well planning, drilling and production operations can result in significant saving for the operators. It is therefore crucial to have an idea and to develop efficient strategy in the case of experimentally expensive and unpredictable oil and gas wells operation in advance. CFD has the important role in petroleum engineering applications such as studying optimization of bit performance, convective heat transfer between casings and annular fluids, flow in porous media like mud filtrate invasion, simulation of multi-phase flow for designing separators, cement displacement, erosion prediction, risk analysis during blowout event, optimization of drilling hydraulics and hole cleaning, wellbore stability analysis, cutting transport in wellbore and modeling flow through whole oil and gas wells. Presented in this study is an attempt to literately summarize estimation and modeling some problems encountered in oil and gas wells during drilling and production operations. In short, this paper evaluates some certain issues in a whole well system and details the successful application of CFD techniques to model and predict these issues before any implementation in a well. Culminated results reveal that CFD analysis can provide valuable insight that helps engineers to understand what is physically happening when such above mentioned events are faced prior to any stage of oil and gas wells operations.
