Abstract

Summary

We measured porosity, permeability and the full anisotropic electrical resistivity tensor of four igneous reservoir analogue samples in the laboratory and compared our measurements to the 3D pore structure obtained using μCT and to grain contact morphology imaged using SEM. We show the presence of significant (300%) resistivity anisotropy and pressure sensitivity in igneous rocks at the centimetre scale. We also show that permeability is unusually low for a given porosity when compared to sandstones. We show how petrophysical parameters and pore shape topology can be correlated using μCT and SEM observations over multiple scales to provide a plausible explanation for our observations. We also detected significant electrical resistivity heterogeneity in some of our samples that increases the complexity of upscaling our measurements.
