Abstract

Summary

The Scandinavian Alum Shale Formation may contain significant gas resources and the play is currently under exploration in Denmark. However, only few wells are available for analysis, and data on the unit are limited. We here present a methodology and data acquisition workflow defining rock types based on old exploration and scientific wells that penetrated the Alum Shale. A multivariate data analytical approach based on XRF-XRD data is used to define four rock types within the organic rich upper Cambrian part of the formation. The rock types are labelled “High TOC – High Sulphur (Types A1–A2)” and “High TOC – High Silica (Types B1–B2)”. The rock types also capture the geo-mechanical variability of the shale. The most prospective part of the formation is demonstrated to extend throughout the entire basin. Almost identical Gr-Resistivity signatures can thus be followed for more than 250 km between wells in southern Scandinavia and the shale are assumed to have predictable rock properties within the basin. Compositional characteristics for the rock types have been defined, enabling easy identification via element fingerprinting. This methodology allows for quick rock type identification using a hand-held XRF scanner applicable in the lab or real time at the drill site.
