Abstract
Compressed air energy storage (CAES) in porous formations is considered as one option of storing renewable energy in the subsurface in order to dampen their fluctuating production. In this study, a CAES scenario is numerically simulated within an idealized anticline porous formation. The pressure fluctuation in the reservoir during cyclic operation is within the required system pressure thresholds while yielding the required production rates. The large-scale pressure response in the storage formation is mainly caused by the initial air fill. Deliverability of the reservoir formation is estimated at 208.5 kg/s air for 30 h, corresponding to 9.8% of the stored air. The maximum production rate is estimated at 336.7 kg/s for 30 minutes.
