Abstract

Summary

The concept of a transition zone, known as Wolf ramp was incorporated into the seismic interpretation of a 3D seismic survey situated within the Baltic Basin in northern Poland. For the analysis well data, 3D seismic data and a synthetic inverse model were used. The integrated studies enabled the finding of a link between the Wolf Ramp and a potential shale gas reservoir from the Silurian Period. Because the deposits do not manifest a characteristic seismic signature it would be of some importance to find a method of identifying them within seismic data. The main idea behind Wolf ramp states that it describes a layer of defined thickness that has a linear change of velocity. The reflection coefficient that is produced at such a boundary is frequency dependent. As we concluded, the Silurian strata from the Polish Basin, which is a potential shale gas reservoir, may be understood as a velocity transition zone. We believe the anomaly that was possible to map with the use of spectral attributes reflects a lithology change that we link to the sand content.
