Abstract
This study suggests that it is more favorable for CCS projects to be performed in tilted aquifers provided the CO2 injection points are not close to any outcrops or structural imperfections of the aquifer. Through the use of horizontal wells and brine injection, the vertical velocity of the migrating plume can be reduced. Development decisions such as well completions, well placement and injection strategies to be utilized influences the rate of CO2 dissolution and the trapping efficiency of long term storage of CO2 in saline aquifers. Brine production from the storage formation was observed to have variable effects on the rate of CO2 dissolution, trapping efficiency and pressure relief based on strategic operational conditions.
