Abstract

Summary

We develop a time-domain visco-acoustic full waveform inversion (FWI) scheme to invert velocity and seismic quality factor (Q) simultaneously. We use a newly developed fractional Laplacian constant-Q wave equation as forward propagator. The wave equation has a high accuracy to simulate the constant-Q model, and is a desirable tool for visco-acoustic FWI. By using the adjoint-state method, we derive the adjoint operator, and the gradient for updating velocity and Q. Both the forward and adjoint operators are discretized by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) to avoid numerical dispersion in space. The L-BFGS method combined with the line-search scheme is adopted for simultaneous inversion of velocity and Q. Numerical examples verify effectiveness of our visco-acoustic FWI scheme in recovering high-resolution velocity and Q images.
