Abstract

Summary

Tihany Geophysical Observatory was founded in Tihany peninsula of Lake Balaton. The volcanic origin of Tihany peninsula has been repeatedly studied. According to the geomagnetic survey the NW-part of the peninsula shows the existence of strong anomalies of volcanic rocks, but in the SE region, the spatial variation of the geomagnetic field was relative week. That is why the place of the observatory was selected in SE region of the peninsula near to the top of a geyser cone. We realized that the significant anomalies appear especially in the clayey part of the grounds of the observatory. In order to provide a more detailed description of the spatial distribution of the different sediments in the grounds of the observatory, magnetic surveys and electric resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements were carried out. As a result we could identify resistivity anomalous as well as crust field anomalous areas. We could separate different types of sediments based on resistivity contrast and magnetic properties. On the other hand we could isolate structures of anomalies in the redeposited aeolian sediments. As a consequence of our study we found the absolute control of the geomagnetic observatory is not influenced by the disturbance of strong crust anomalies.
