Abstract

Summary

Matrix acidizing in carbonate reservoirs is a common practice in the petroleum industry to remove formation damage by dissolving the rock and creating wormholes. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the stimulation process, the treatment fluid must be diverted to fully cover the damaged zone. The fluid diversion becomes of prime importance in multi-layered reservoirs where preferential flow pathways take in most of the stimulation fluid and the lower permeable zones remain untreated.

The objective of this work is to show that how the simulation results of an already performed stimulation driven by a matrix acidizing operation for a well in a Middle-Eastern field proves the necessity of developing the SDEA system for stimulation of these reservoirs.

A commercial software is used to simulate the executed actual matrix acidizing operation. the results show that the stimulation fluid entered the formation with the higher permeability and the formation with lower permeability stayed almost untreated or treated less than the high permeable one and the stimulation occurs in a non-uniform manner. It proves the necessity of developing a self-diverting emulsified acid for stimulating the wells in this field so that the stimulation in both the layers occurs in a more uniform manners.
