Abstract

Summary

There are three main reasons that show the necessity of enhanced oil recovery in Iranian oil fields. Firstly, the average recovery factor of Iranian oil fields (25–27%) is lower than the global average. Secondly, the initial energy of mature oil fields (which are in the second half of their natural life and producing the major share of oil production) has been dramatically decreased and needs additional energy source. Thirdly, the high amount of reserve to production of the Iranian crude oil makes the Iranian oil fields strategic resources for supporting the future demands of energy. In this study, EOR research center of Shiraz University and IOR research center of University of Stavanger and their main public research products are considered. The results on the different projects performed in these two research centers show that the rock-fluid and fluid-fluid interactions, as well as the rock properties are the main issues which should be considered almost equally in EOR projects. Most of the published world energy forecast the dependency of future energy sources on fossil fuels, therefore, the significant amounts of Iranian hydrocarbon reserves is a great opportunity for the investment of reputable oil companies.
