Abstract

Summary

The Aki-Richards’ linearized approximation of the Zoeppritz equations is one of the most commonly used approximation for AVO forward modeling and inversion. However, the linearized approximation is often not accurate enough for large incidence angles and strong impedance contrasts. We present a method to modify the Aki-Richards’ approximation and obtain a more accurate linearized AVO equation. We first estimate a modified operator for linearized AVO equation by combining the true elastic models with PP reflection coefficients that are computed at well locations by using the Zoeppritz equations. We then interpolate the modified AVO forward operator (MAFO) along the seismic reflection structures. Finally, based on the MAFO, we apply the Bayesian linearized AVO inversion method to estimate P-velocity, S-velocity and density. We use a synthetic example to demonstrate the superiority of the MAFO approximation over the Aki-Richards’ approximation. We observe that the resolution and accuracy of the predicted density is especially improved by using the proposed MAFO approximation.
