Abstract

Summary

We study the feasibility of CO2 storage monitoring using marine CSEM by employing a real reservoir injection scenario from a candidate site considered for the Norwegian full-scale demonstration project (Northern Light). First, 2.5D inversion exercise is performed for several time-steps to demonstrate that the developing CO2 plume distribution can be imaged with satisfaction via CSEM. Then, a more realistic 3D inversion study for the model after 25 years of injection is executed and demonstrably captures the distribution and electrical resistivity properties of the plume. The rock physics model is used to relate the 3D inversion result to CO2 saturated column height and total CO2 volume. We find good agreement between the inversion recovered and the true model volume.
