Abstract

Parallels are drawn between phenomena observed in optics and typical characteristics in exploration seismology. Considerations are also made in the context of major physical theories throughout the centuries. It is concluded that the one key similarity between optics and seismics is the transmission volume, which has ‘fuzzy’ characteristics. Distribution of energy in this volume determines the achievable resolution and might give an insight into spatial inhomogeneities in the subsurface.
