Abstract

Although the measurement of induced polarization effects has been universally accepted as a viable technique of geophysical prospection, the underlying electrochemical phenomena which contribute to the measured effect are less well understood. The present paper reviews the various phenomena which are thought to contribute to induced polarization and the contribution of univalent interfacial electrochemical reactions is considered in detail for both metallic I.P. and the normal effect. The treatment gives rise naturally to the presence of secondary current generators at the metal/electrolyte interface and the time characteristics of such generators are exhibited by the I.P. voltage decay.
