Abstract

Three 24-fold seismic reflection lines were collected in the Hanmer Basin, a pull-apart basin on the Hope Fault, New Zealand. The lines were located at the east end of the basin and show a well-bedded sequence of Pleistocene alluvial sediments overlying Mesozoic basement. Over 1 km of sediments are present adjacent to the Hope Fault. A number of thrust faults disrupt the sediments and have produced unconformities and local uplift. Strike slip motion on the Hope Fault has been accompanied by episodic uplift, perhaps because of bending of the Hope Fault as part of regional deformation.
