The first derivative, or Vertical Gradient, has the same properties, Like the second derivative, it does not depend on the locally linear regional anomaly. Moreover, the gradient is less affected by experimental errors. The report gives a practical method of calculating the vertical gradient. Its application is identical to that in general use for calculating the second derivative, except that the numerical coefficients are different. The method also allows the establishment of formulae for downward extension of the field and its derivatives., UL https://www.earthdoc.org/content/journals/10.1111/j.1365-2478.1953.tb01139.x
