Formation of rifted continental margins: a discussion of mechanisms

Since the inception of plate teetonic concepts in the mid-1960s, the importance of thermal processes in the formation of rifted continent al margins has gradually been realised. It is now generally accepted that continental margin sediments are exposed to a decreasing geothermal gradient with time after continental breakup.
