Abstract

Seismic images over oilfield reservoirs and seams in coalfields share at least one common demand in terms of structural resolution. Operators wish to know about faults which disrupt reservoir or coal seam continuity. The required imageable throw is equal to the layer thickness. This could be 10m at 1-km depth (1:100) in the oilfield or 2m at 500-m depth (1:250) in the coalfield. The requirement is perhaps more pressing in the coalfield (Jackson 1985).
