Abstract

The forward transformation has been used in velocity inversion procedures for both reftected and refracted arrivals (Stoffa et al. 1981; Schultz 1982) as it is able to make use of both pre-critical and post-criticaI arrivals. By transforming common midpoint gathers into the tau-P domain, the process of normal moveout (NMO) correction and stacking becomes one of summing along an elliptical rather than a hyperbolic trajectory (Kelamisand Mitchell 1989).
