Abstract

As in all industrialized countries, hydrocarbons play a dominant role in the energy supply of the Federal Republic of Germany. Less than 4.0% of the oil and 25% of the gas consumed (about 100 million metric tonnes of oil and 63 billion m³ of natural gas) comes from the country's own production. Although German oil and gas production has a long tradition and great experience, geological constraints represented by relatively small and complicated reservoirs prevent a larger contribution. The technological and commercial aspects of the exploration and production of oil and gas in Germany are described in this article.
