Abstract

This study was undertaken following the appreciation that while relationships between acoustic impedance and porosity are of value to explorers, a knowledge of permeability distribution is more important in developing a reservoir. The ability to provide reservoir engineers with estimates of permeability, away from well control, is a significant factor in maximizing the profitability of a field. Seismic data provides a really extensive information over a field and links the separated but vertically intensive data from wells; besides furnishing structural information, the seismic data contains (in the noisefree case) information about rock strength. Hence seismic data has the potential of providing a real permeability information, provided that relations between permeability and rock strength can be established.
