Abstract
Among possible characterization techniques used in horizontal wells within hydrocarbon reservoirs, geophysical measurements seem to hold promise for giving a set of images of the reservoir and the surrounding layers on different scales (Mari et al. 1990~ Mari and Laurent 1991). Acoustic and high-frequency seismic logging in horizontal wells are very attractive techniques for high-resolution imaging over ranges of investigation up to several tens of metres. One objective is to provide a geometrical description of the layers and fractures within a few metres of the well. This description may be used in the interpretation of logs, which must take into account the stratification in the close vicinity of the well. Secondly, optimization of well production by appropriate completion requires knowledge of the formation at greater ranges.
