Abstract

It was the early research work of Glennie (1970, 1972) on modern deserts that laid the foundation for the initial modelling of the palaeogeography and depositional environment of the Upper Rotliegend in the Southern Permian Basin. During the early stages of exploration of the UK sector of the basin, Marie (1975) utilized a refined version of Glennie's depositional model to account for the distribution of the gas fields and also to predict reservoir quality. Later, Plein (1978) extended the generalized palaeogeographic/depositional model into the German and Polish parts of the basin.
