Abstract
Although the potential field methods have well established theory, acquisition technology and interpretation procedures, they have a poor reputation in many quarters. Many companies and workers refuse to use the methods or accept any results, often due to previous bad experiences or a belief that ambiguity is inevitable and resolution poor. Even sympathetic users have encountered problems with interpretations. The lack, or apparent lack, of rigour in interpretation methods and the possible multiplicity of solutions deters many users, even though the methods are capable of providing cost-effective coverage of surveyareas.
