Abstract

The Valley of Mexico is a flat depression ringed by volcanoes and hills of volcanic tuff. The centre of the depression was formerly occupied by a large swampy lake. Downtown Mexico City was founded on a low island near the western edge of the lake. After the city was occupied by Spanish forces in 1521, the lake was gradually drained and the city expanded on the muddy flats formerly covered by water.
