Abstract
The CD-ROM (Compact Disc - Read Only Memory) technology, introduced to the general market by Philips and Sony in 1984, became more widely available in the early 1990s. However, only in 1994 was there a breakthrough in the use of CD-ROM technology in both professional and consumer markets. The number of different CD-ROM titles totalled 1500 in 1991. It now well exceeds 10,000 or maybe even 20,000, covering a wide range of fields including databases, educational and scientific applications, and games.
