Oil and gas in Germany - exploration, production and research
By M. AlbertsenAs in all industrialized countries, hydrocarbons play a dominant role in the energy supply of the Federal Republic of Germany. Less than 4.0% of the oil and 25% of the gas consumed (about 100 million metric tonnes of oil and 63 billion m³ of natural gas) comes from the country's own production. Although German oil and gas production has a long tradition and great experience, geological constraints represented by relatively small and complicated reservoirs prevent a larger contribution. The technological and commercial aspects of the exploration and production of oil and gas in Germany are described in this article.

The effect of the succes of 3D seismic data on the exploration and appraisal of Zechstein targets in NW germany
Authors W.-D. Karnin, K. Rockenbauch and P.A. RuijtenbergLarge parts of NW Germany are underlain by a broad anhydrite and carbonate platform developed during late Permian (Zechstein) times (Fig. 1 and Betz et al. 1986; Ziegier 1982; Sannemann et al. 1978). Exploration for sour gas from the calcitic/dolomitic Stassfurt-carbonate cycle (Hauptdolomit, Ca2) has been undertaken for approximately 30 years. Nearly 1000 wells penetrating the Zechstein have been drilled since 1960 in an area of about 40000 km2 which is covered by a total of 50000 km of 2D seismic lines.
