Sedimentology, reservoir characteristics and exploration potential of the Roma Sandstone, west of Shetland
Authors I. Verstralen and A. HurstRenewed exploration interest in the area of continental shelf west of Shetland during the UK 12th and 14th licensing rounds gives new significance to understanding the origin and distribution of the Upper Jurassic Sandstone, both as an exploration target within its area of known occurrence, and as the lateral equivalent of potentially better quality reservoirs. Despite almost 20 years of sporadic exploration activity, the west of Shetland area retains 'frontier' status because of the lack of geological understanding and limited commercial success. No formal lithostratigraphic framework is defined for the Jurassic in this area.

An example of acoustics and very-high resolution seismic in a near-horizontal borehole
Authors J.L. Mari, P. Gavin and F. CoppensAmong possible characterization techniques used in horizontal wells within hydrocarbon reservoirs, geophysical measurements seem to hold promise for giving a set of images of the reservoir and the surrounding layers on different scales (Mari et al. 1990~ Mari and Laurent 1991). Acoustic and high-frequency seismic logging in horizontal wells are very attractive techniques for high-resolution imaging over ranges of investigation up to several tens of metres. One objective is to provide a geometrical description of the layers and fractures within a few metres of the well. This description may be used in the interpretation of logs, which must take into account the stratification in the close vicinity of the well. Secondly, optimization of well production by appropriate completion requires knowledge of the formation at greater ranges.

The Fjerritslev Fault offshore Denmark - salt and fault interactions
Authors J.E. Christensen and J.A. KorstgårdThe Fjerritslev Fault is the southwestern fault of the Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone off- and onshore northwestern Denmark (Figs 1 and 2). The Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone, also called the Fennoscandian Border Zone, is a fundamental structural element in the tectonic development of the North Sea Basin. The aim of this paper is to describe and interpret the post-Carboniferous structural development of the Fjerritslev Fault and adjacent areas offshore north-west Jylland, Denmark. Our investigations are based on regional seismic reflection data and a few wells, all acquired in connection with exploration for hydrocarbons in the area.

Hydrocarbons in Spain - exploration and production
By C. AlvarezSpain cannot be considered a prolific hydrocarbon country. Based on data as of April 1992, annual domestic crude oil production accounts for only 2% of consumption (1.1 MM tons against 53.8 MM tons) and gas production accounts for only 17% (40 bcf against 232 bcf). These percentages will decrease as consumption increases and more oil and gas is imported. The main reason for the low levels of production in Spain is the geological complexity of the Iberian Peninsula which leads to difficult exploration and causes structures containing hydrocarbons to be broken up into small accumulations. Another most important factor is the low level of exploration work. In the last 40 years, only some 700 wells have been drilled in contrast to much larger numbers in neighbouring France and Italy. Today only two oil fields (Casablanca and Ayoluengo) and two gas fields (Gaviota and Marismas) are producing. The Serrablo gas field, in the Pyrenees, is used for gas storage.
