Computer science for geophysicists. Part V: databases and expert systems
By L. HattonThis article concerns two relatively recent and closely linked software topics of great importance to all computer users; in many ways it has proven to be the most difficult to write of the series so far. As far as the expert system is concerned, part of the problem is that this is the first topic which I have written about of which I have not actually had any 'hands-on' experience.

Pattern of Landset MSS data over Zawar lead - zinc mines, Rajasthan, India
Authors K. Mallick and Y.V.S. MurthyIt is a challenging problem for earth scientists to locate and delineate ore-bearing zones by interpretation of remotely-sensed Landsat data. Successes have been few and far between. Before one attempts to interpret these data over a virgin area for mineral exploration, it is worth examining the anomaly pattems over known orebearing horizons. Such an exercise provides us with a better understanding and control to proceed from the known to the unknown areas.
