Vertical seismic profiles - an introduction
By B. CassellIn the past two decades the cost of developing an oilfield has soared from a few million to a billion or more dollars. Geophysical techniques are being increasingly called upon to aid in planning field development to prevent or at least reduce the number of mispositioned boreholes. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP) is one amongst several new geophysical techniques used in the planning process. The importance of this technique lies in its potential for detecting subsurface detail that is generally obscured on conventional surface seismic data.

An introduction to geophysical tomography
More LessWhilst the appearance of the word 'tomography' in the geophysics literature is a relatively recent phenomenon, geophysicists have been carrying out tomographic surveys from the very birth of the subject. The location of salt domes in the Gulf Coast during the 1920s using fan refraction shooting was a tomographic experiment. Bois et al. (1972) carried out a well-to-well seismic experiment in 1970 and imaged the velocity field between the two wells, but did not choose to refer to the work as tomography.
