Rapid computation of IP sounding curves
Authors M.H. Loke, C.Y. Lee and M.S. ArafinAlthough the calculation of resistivity sounding curves is well known and documented (Koefoed 1979), the computation of IP sounding curves is less weil known. Due to the increasingly widespread use of IP sounding for groundwater surveys (Roy and Elliot 1980; Olorunfemi 1985), a fast and accurate method for the computation of LP sounding curves is needed. In this paper, we discuss our experience with computer programs for this purpose. The computer used for our calculations is an IBM PC/XT microcomputer with an Intel 8087 mathematical coprocessor. While it is reasonbly fast for most uses, it is still significantly slower than mainframe computers. As such, an efficient program is important so that the interpretation can be completed in a reasonable amount of time.

Seismic reflection tomography: a case study
Authors B.C. Dyer and M.H. WorthingtonAn iterative procedure has been developed involving two-dimensional (2D) velocity estimation followed by reflection point migration to model the velocity field and reflector locations from seismic reflection data. The method utilizes traveltimes picked from prestack seismic reflection data. At each iterative step the velocity field is obtained by a tomographic inversion procedure. The reflector locations are determined according to the location of reflection points migrated using the current velocity field. The process of reflection point migration is sufficiently fast that reflector location may be performed using an interactive graphics routine on a modern microcomputer or work station. The model can readily be constrained using a priori information at any stage. A clear appreciation is obtained of any ambiguity between the velocity field and reflector geometry that may be inherent in the data. An example is shown of the application of the method to a marine seismie reflection data set from the North Sea.
