The Lower Magdalena Basin started in Eocene to Oligocene time with episodic transtension and tectonic
collapse associated to oblique collision between the Caribbean and South American plates. This first
subsidence was followed by at least two superimposed andean foredeeps of Miocene to Pliocene age, caused
by uplift of both the Santa Marta Massif and the Romeral tectonic lineament.
