Abstract

The present study deals with deterministic seismic scenario generation based on macroseimic intensities, generated by damaging, real earthquakes of the past. The both cities scenarios are representation of the severity of ground shaking over an urban area. The work on scenarios was guided by the perception that usable and realistic ground motion maps had to be produced for urban areas. The differences in local geological and geotechnical characteristics, and urban features of the cities has made it necessary to apply different alternative of the approach sufficiently flexible to account for the basic factors in the different situations. Such scenarios are intended as a basic input for developing detailed earthquake damage scenarios for the cities and can be used in earthquake-safe town and infrastructure planning.
