Neoarchean to Neoproterozoic giant mantle plumes in southern Africa: implications for plate tectonic theory

The simultaneous timing of worldwide thermal events is supported by Nelson (1992)<br>and Barley et al. (1998). The observed episodic volcanism and crustal accretion<br>linked to three major mantle plume related events that peaked at between 2.7Ma and<br>2.6Ga, 2.1 and 1.9 Ga and 1.2 to 1.1 Ga has been modelled by Condie ( 1998 ) using<br>available isotope data. These crustal accretion events have been directly linked to<br>occurrences of radiating dykes(Carpenter and Yale, 1998).
