Vertical and lateral resolution of surface electroseismic data and the thin bed response

The lateral resolution of surface electroseismic (ES) data is discussed in terms of geometrical considerations and investigated by means of a simplified model. The ES Fresnel zones are found to be larger than their seismic equivalents and the lateral resolution of surface ES data is consequently poorer. As in seismics, higher dominant frequency and broader bandwidth sources lead to improved lateral resolution of ES data.
