Abstract

Aeromagnetic surveys play an important role in the detection and analysis of terrestrial impact structures. Although gravity provides clearer and simpler signatures of impact craters, large semi-regional scale aeromagnetic surveys are widely available and offer great potential for recognition of additional impacts, especially those concealed by post-impact sediments. Terrestrial craters are constantly being affected by erosion, sedimentation and tectonic activity and only about 150 terrestrial impact craters have been recognised, the majority in geologically stable cratons of North America, Europe and Australia.
