Abstract

The application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) as a Non Destructive Test (NDT) technique for the assessment of railway track bed ballast is presented in this paper. The GPR was applied on Vitória – Minas railroad (EFVM) and it allowed us to detect changes on geometry and composition of the ballast and sub-ballast which were revealed by amplitude and geometry variations of the reflectors corresponding to the air-ballast and ballast-sub-ballast interfaces.
