Abstract

We present sensitivity distributions for the marine controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) experiment for a simple half space in deep waters and compare that to the special case where the region of interest is overlain by a thick resistive layer (i.e. subsalt/subbasalt scenario). By analyzing the sensitivity to the vertical and the horizontal resistivity component separately we can show that the inline source receiver configuration is only sensitive to the vertical resistivity component while the broadside configuration is sensitive to the horizontal resistivity component given a homogeneous half space model. Changing the model changes the sensitivity distribution significantly. The sensitivity to the vertical resistivity component vanishes while the sensitivity to the horizontal resistivity component increases when a thick resistive layer is introduced.
