Abstract
Natural gas accounts for about 24 % of world-wide primary energy consumption, after crude oil and hard coal. Its share has increased in the last several years. This trend is expected to continue in the future (IEA 2005). Therefore the question arises, how the increasing gas demand in Europe can be assured? This question and the role of Russia and otger CIS countries will be analysed focussing on geology of hydrocarbon basins and giant gas fields, resource base, technical viability and contract security.
