Using the Nature of the Misfit Surface to Improve the Inversion of Gravity Data

Knowledge of the form of the misfit surface can be used to facilitate the inversion of geophysical<br>model parameters which have a non-linear response. Local quadratic models are fit to regions of<br>the misfit surface to enable estimates of the optima! model parameters, then least-squares<br>inversion is used to 'tidy‘ the result. The form of the misfit surface can also be used to check for<br>the presence of minima nearby to that which the inversion has just converged.
