Abstract

In order to analyze the basal sequence of the Carboniferous System and the development of its lower deposits (Fm. Tupambi), a reference horizon time slice (the top of the Devonian Iquiri Fm.) was used. The analysis was performed over an 80 ms window<br>centered on the reference horizon, and it was sampled every 4 ms. This gave us the opportunity to define the existence of eight channel sequences, five with dominant SE - NW direction and three with about E-W directions. The NW - SE channels are characterized by superimposed fluvial systems deposits, and the E - W ones by fluvio glacial systems deposits. The difference between these kinds of deposits is seismically manifested by their geometry and the degree of reflector continuity that define their internal structure. The use of 3D visualization software was very useful in order to identify the relation between the seismic and geologic features.
