Abstract

The seismic activity in Sao Caetano began in 2006 and occurred on 5/20/2006, in this city, an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 mb. This is the largest earthquake recorded in the Pernambuco State until today. In 2007 we installed a network of local stations to study the seismicity in Sao Caetano area (Lima Neto et al., 2009) and has been proven the correlation between seismicity and a branch to northeastern Pernambuco Lineament. In the year 2010 was recorded earthquakes in Sao Caetano in two distinct areas - the area previously studied in 2007 (Lima Neto et al., 2009) and a region closer to the center of the city, where an event magnitude 2.7 mb on 10 March, 2010/03/2010. The determination of hypocenters was performed using the program HYPO71 and the focal mechanism compound was obtained based on visual inspection of the focal sphere aided by the hypocentral location. The hypocenters determination showed that these earthquakes have a clear correlation with the Pernambuco Lineament. The area where these events were analyzed. The composite focal mechanism obtained had the following parameters: strike 266 deg, dip 62 deg and 125 deg for rake, featuring a normal fault. The fault plane was determined using the dip of the hypocenters location. Although both activities occurred at different locations both showed strong correlation with the Pernambuco Lineament and its branches. One of consequences of this study is that the Pernambuco Lineament has a seismogeinic potential and its activity has implications for seismic hazard in the region.
