Abstract
The seismic activity recorded by networks deployed in NE Brazil shows that this region has great seismogenic potential. This region includes the northwestern part of the State of Ceará, where several seismic events have been reported since the 19th century. The study area exhibits important tectonic structures, such as the Transbrasiliano Lineament, a shear zone that extends from Northeast to Southwestern Brazil and continuous in West Africa (Kandi fault) in a pre-Pangea breakup reconstruction. Seismic activity in the study area is located near the city of Santana do Acaraú. In this area, a digital seismographic network was deployed near the cities of Santana do Acaraú and Morrinhos in 2009. The preliminary results, which correspond to the analysis from December 17, 2009 to March 29, 2010, reveal that epicenters in the area are close to the Transbrasiliano Lineament. However, we cannot assert that this activity is directly correlated with the Transbrasiliano Lineament, despite the spatial proximity of seismicity to this structure.
