Abstract

Dipole acoustic logs allows for the direct measurement of shear wave velocities in a "slow" formation, where conventional (monopole) logs fail. Cross-dipole measurements have the potential of providing information about the direction and magnitude of azimuthal variations in shear wave velocity in a formation, from which one could infer parameters such as the principal stress direction, in situ stress state and fracture density.
