Abstract

In basins containing deformed salt, salt tectonics can exert a paramount influence on petroleum systems. In such basins, the petroleum system cannot be deciphered or understood without an intimate knowledge of the role of salt during basin evolution. We illustrate this close connection by comparing the interplay between salt tectonics and petroleum systems in Angola (Kwanza and lower Congo Basins) with the analogous interplay in the Gulf of Mexico Basin.
