Abstract

The present work tests the performance of GPR system for shallow stratigraphic studies in Quaternary sediments in Southeastern Brazil, which involve clayey floodplain deposits, sandy, clayey-silty and sandy-silty colluvial-alluvial deposits, clayey-silty and sandy-silty colluvial deposits, and weathered basement. For this purpose the Parafba do SuI middle valley were surveyed. This region was chosen due to conaissence of its geomorphology and its Quaternary stratigraphy. Eleven GPR profiles were made, in four differents sites. Through the radar proftles we could recognize the mainly stratigraphical features as erosion surfaces and inner bedding of lager sedimentary bodies. The velocities founded for those materials agree with the velocities described in literature for silty and clayey sediments. The radar penetration was at about 8m, but it could be reach 15m. It makes the GPR system an excellent tool for Quaternary research in Southeastern Brazil
