Abstract

Measurements of various characteristics of the lightning discharge will be reviewed. The use of discharges stimulated to occur (triggered) between an overhead thundercloud and a designated point on the ground for studying of the properties and the effects of lightning will be discussed. Recent findings from the experiments conducted at the Camp Blanding, Florida lightning triggering facility operated by the University of Florida will be presented. Modeling of lightning processes with the emphasis on the return stroke will be reviewed. Validation of the models using measured electric and magnetic fields due to natural and triggered lightning will be discussed.
