Abstract
This paper introduces an ellipsoidal approximation of group velocities of the P-, SJ- and S2-wave propagation modes in an orthorhombic media. This new approximation is valid for small angles near the vertical direction. The approach is based on transformations that map ellipsoids in the phase domain onto ellipsoids in the group domain. Phase angles can be directly translated into group angles and the reciprocal of phase velocities into the group velocities. The framework developed is simple but represents a powerful device to approximate group velocities and interpret data recorded on orthorhombic media.
